About us
As a grassroots, peer-informed nonprofit, we provide low-barrier, life-saving services to community members who are unhoused, street-involved, or precariously housed. Our work is grounded in harm reduction, cultural safety, trauma-informed practice, and the wisdom of lived and living experience.
The Eddy is a 24/7 year-round shelter serving up to 25 guests. As an interim shelter, we function as an important bridge while a permanent supportive housing shelter is developed in our community. Over the next 18 months we are committed to creating a warm, welcoming and dignified space for guests, while fostering a supportive and collaborative workplace for staff.
About the role
The Shelter Manager helps create the conditions for both staff and guests to thrive. This role keeps the shelter running smoothly by supporting frontline staff, coordinating staffing needs, strengthening team culture, and responding to the operational needs of a busy, low-barrier shelter.
You’ll work closely with the Program Director to foster a workplace grounded in trust, collaboration and care. We’re looking for someone who believes that supporting staff well leads to better support for guests, and who approaches leadership with curiosity, flexibility and compassion rather than rigid rules.
What you’d be doing
Staff support and coordination
- Coordinate staffing for a 24/7 shelter, including schedules, shift coverage and on-call support
- Provide day-to-day guidance, problem-solving and support to frontline staff
- Help recruit, onboard, mentor and retain a strong, caring team
- Coordinate staff training and support ongoing learning and reflective practice
- Participate in the on-call leadership rotation
- Foster a workplace culture grounded in harm reduction, trauma-informed practice, accountability and mutual respect
- Support staff through challenging situations with compassion, consistency, and a focus on learning
Shelter operations
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the shelter
- Coordinate meal services, supplies and other operational needs
- Support staff in responding to incidents, emergencies and unexpected challenges
- Work alongside the Program Director to improve policies, procedures and shelter operations
- Build positive relationships with neighbours, service providers and community partners
- Respond to concerns with empathy, professionalism, and a focus on collaborative solutions
What we’re looking for
- Experience coordinating teams, supervising staff, or supporting day-to-day operations
- A nonjudgmental, compassionate approach to working with people who use substances or are experiencing homelessness
- The ability to remain calm, thoughtful and solution-focused in high-pressure situations
- Commitment to harm reduction, cultural safety and trauma-informed practice
- Strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills
- Reliable, accountable, and able to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation and work flexible hours when needed
Helpful, not required
- Lived or living experience of substance use, homelessness, poverty, or mental health challenges
- Experience working in shelters, outreach, peer support or healthcare
- Naloxone, First Aid, or Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training
- Knowledge of local Indigenous communities and culturally safer approaches to service delivery
- Experience with conflict resolution, de-escalation, or supporting people experiencing mental health crises
